The Most Skilled Tennis Player Of All Time

By Gregory Brooks

Both genders are known to have done well in tennis. The game can be played in a pair or individually. You could also get the Grand Slam in an individual match. Alternatively, you could play the doubles, which is playing in pairs. If you were to think who the best tennis player is, you would think of the names of Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Margaret Court, Ilie Nastaste, Aurthur Ashe, Roger Taylor Manuel Orantes, Rod Laver, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer. However, to point out the one and say that this is the best tennis player of all time is a very tricky task. Therefore, we should just take a look at how each one differs from another. For instance, Iles Nastaste maintained the glory of tennis in Spain and loved playing the role of an extraordinary showman. As a result, he became the most adored player of Spanish tennis.

Arthur Ashe, due to his skin color, was forced to deal with prejudice from the Americans, who did not want to have anything to do with black people. It was a time when black people could not even use the facilities of some country tennis clubs. All this did not stop him. He worked hard at the game and was soon able to become the greatest player in the country.

Going by the Grand Slam titles, you could say that Rod Laver is the best. He won four Grand Slams in a year two times, in 1962 and 1969. He was renown for his shots, and he could face any situation with the most unexpected return.

Let's look at the players of the past. The first one to come to one's mind would be Lew Hoad, who would always aim at succeeding with the least effort and the smallest score. He was renown for his sledging hits. Next in contention is the undefeatable Pancho Gonzales, a man who almost never lost. However, if he did, he would walk off the court with confidence that he would surely win the next match.

The fact that Pete Sampras and Roger Federer rate among the most amazing tennis players endowed with flawless manners, while on the court or off it, is indisputable. Roger Federer has 16 Grand Slams wins and Sampras has 14 wins to his credit.

Now, let's take a look at ladies, Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. They are all incredible. Their play pleases the tennis fans to no end. Their play is relentless. Smooth movements, combined with rapid play makes Maria Ester Bueno, the Brazilian, one of the most exquisite players to adorn the tennis courts and enchant the fans with her poise. Roger Federer also falls into this category. Though Steffi Graf is at the top of the list, one could say that she is the most graceful loser. Even a match lost due to health conditions, would not discourage her from showing her appreciation of the opponent with all the refinement that goes with her character.

You can learn that there is a number of tournaments in tennis every year. The Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open are the most important ones. The players are ranked by the way they perform at the game, and how many wins they achieve. These rankings are made available to the public.

In trying to pick the best tennis player of all time, the ranking alone does not really tell you how good a player is. It just gives you the amount of wins, the length of his career and figures of the games played. This does not indicate the quality of the player. An early retirement will put the player at the bottom of the list. Playing for many years will put the player on top of the list. Therefore, if you take the list to identify the best player, you will be mistaken. It is not right to judge the players by their position, as it would be both inappropriate and insufficient.
