Golf As A Sport For The Family

By Geoffrey Clapp

Golf isn't the most popular sport to some people for many reasons, including the fact that it consumes time. That may be true and you may complain about it, but it would be better, though, if your entire family went golfing. Your children will benefit from golf in many ways, as it is a sport that can improve their hand-eye coordination and motor skills, and give them a good, brisk exercise walking around the course.

If you want the family to learn golf, your best bet is to take some lessons. Many driving ranges offer classes, as do the Pros at the golf courses. Everybody needs to start with the basics, and lessons can help you achieve this. Once you and your family have gotten the hang of things through golf practice at the local driving range, then it may be high time for you to schedule an actual game of 18 holes.

Young children may not manage the walk round 18 holes, and even with a cart, you might want to consider playing 9-hole rounds at first. Golf has a lot of unwritten laws regarding proper decorum on the course, including giving a chance to others if you're delaying the game - make sure to learn and follow them. And since this is no place to be yelling and running around like Tarzan, you will have to teach your children these rules and have them follow as well. Closely monitor your children's behavior, and do so for their own safety, as they may be prone to standing where they shouldn't be standing, getting in the way of golfers swinging their clubs.

Golf also helps to teach children self-control - and anger management! The etiquette of the golf course dictates that golfers should not toss clubs around and yell profanities if they may be having a bad game - so make sure your kids don't imitate adult golfers who may engage in this boorish behavior!

Once your family is comfortable on the golf course, you should consider a golfing vacation. You can choose from several interesting accommodation deals offered by golf resorts, with their package fees inclusive of green fees and other charges. Some resorts offer child-friendly packages, with fun golf games and lessons included. These offer the adults an opportunity to play a round on their own too.

Eighteen holes of golf is no joke, though at first it certainly looks like a walk in the park. Golf can serve many purposes - first, as a fun game for the whole family, second, as a form of exercise, and third, as a chance to see the great outdoors for a few quality hours. What more could you ask for from a sport?
