Everything You Need To Know About Putting

By Karen Manning

It doesn't take a golfing expert to tell you the heart of the game - putting.

It looks so easy - rolling that little ball into a nearby hole. But mastering the skill has threatened many a golfer's sanity.

These tips are designed to help you in mastering the skill of putting.

The first tip is to use only one ball for your putting practice. This is most realistic when compared to actual golf. You tend to concentrate better this way than if you have a bucket of balls to keep digging into. And be sure to practice your putting daily.

Putting isn't all in the wrists. If you are putting the ball, notice how your palms are in front of each other. This prevents one hand from dominating and ensures that both work together for you.

Make sure you're totally relaxed before you strike the ball. "My muscles are jelly" - this should be your mantra whenever you're preparing to strike. If your muscles are stiff, your game will be likewise.

Make your back and follow through strokes the same length.

Make the right hand stronger and the left hand weaker to make your putter's face square.

Once again, putting isn't just about the wrists - in fact, it should be more about your shoulders.

If you putt with the right, the left wrist should be firm.

Your knees also need to be relaxed. Don't lock up.

Maintain a shoulder's width's distance between your heels.

When making a curved putt, your feet need to be parallel to the chosen line and not to the hole.

Use the same principles of baseball bat speed in putting - ball contact means more speed. Your grip should be moving closer to your target.

If your putt should miss, it would be preferable to have it miss by going past the hole rather than short of the target. It will be easier to finish it in the second try.

In case of bad weather, you can stay home and use your carpet to simulate the golf course for your putting practice.

It is always best to stick to one putter that you're most comfortable with.

And finally, it will never hurt to put some pressure on yourself whenever you attempt a putt.
