Putting In A Nutshell

By Heidi McKee

To quote the late Jerry Reed, when you're hot, you're hot, when you're not, you're not. Not even Tiger Woods himself can beat you. But there are also times when even your pet dog would have a better chance of getting a hole in one than you making a simple shot.

You were using the exact same club, and everything felt like it would when you'd be playing well. You were using the exact same equipment and stance, so why the bad game?

Is putting all about making lucky shots? Not at all. Putting is like an interview question with no right or wrong answers. And granted, putting isn't an exact science.

If putting happens to be the reason you were a train wreck out there on the golf course, everything can be summarized in one syllable. Stiff. That's right, you may have been too stiff, resulting in an awkward-looking stroke and a lack of accuracy in your shots.

Golf shouldn't be rocket science, but it becomes just that when your muscles are stiff. Relaxing your muscles and your entire body, for that matter, is the key to good putting. When you're putting in a relaxed movement, you have more freedom and a better chance of success. If you look tense while trying to stay steady, then you have just cooked up a recipe for failure.

Confidence and freedom of movement is at an optimum level if your putting game is going great guns. However, this changes if you miss what could have been an easy putt - you begin bracing yourself, which isn't good at all. The more you brace yourself, the worse the tension in your body becomes. And with more tension comes worse putting.

You can change putters, change your stance, and mimic every pro player you've ever watched. But it won't matter unless you relax your muscles. Free up your muscles and make them feel loose as a goose. Everything should feel free as a bird in the sky.

Tension is the ultimate spoiler when it comes to shooting properly. If you glare at the ball and look at it as if you want to have it for dinner, this kills the freedom that you need for a good putt. Now you may make several shots in a row, but the time will come that no matter what you try, nothing seems to work. That's the time to gelatin-ize your body. Relax your whole body as if you're about to fall to the ground. (But stay standing!)

Aside from the obvious benefits this technique of relaxation can provide to your overall game, your confidence will earn a boost and those jitters will be history before you know it.

Simply put, relaxing your muscles is your secret weapon when it comes to good putting.
