The Matter Of Chiropractic Treatment For Golfers

By Beth Willis

Golf is a game that puts much strain on the back and spine of the players. The standard golf game is played over 18 holes, so it could mean hours of swinging different golf clubs. The strain is in the body joints, with the back and spine the most affected. This is why people who are heavily involved in this sport sometimes take advantage of a chiropractor. Chiropractors specifically work on the back and spinal region with adjustments and manipulation.

Chiropractic care is the manipulation or adjustment of spine disorders. They believe that most diseases and ailments have a root cause, subluxations, or misalignment of the vertebrae. When this is manipulated and the vertebrae put back into place, chiropractors believe that the patient will be healed and disease free.

The basic stance and actions of the golfer put a strain on his back and spine. Even when there are no abnormalities with their back and spines, golfers who undergo chiropractic care found out that they feel relief and able to move better. The explanation is that the manipulations and adjustments put the vertebrae in good shape allowing the player to play without any discomfort. There are also some chiropractic exercises that golfers can do to get themselves prepared for their game.

Basic muscle stretches, especially the hamstrings and groin areas, will help to loosen up muscles and improve flexibility.

With your club across your shoulders, stretch from side to side. The idea is to relax your back muscles before you swing those clubs.

Get into your swing position and bend right and left. Another pregame exercise to relax your body joints.

Next, hold your golf club with both hands at your back and raise it up to work your shoulder area.

Holding your club, swing it backwards a few times. This exercise addresses your different joints.

You need to exercise your to neck muscles too.

Another ailment usually suffered by golfers is the "golfer's elbow". The elbow can over-rotate after a particularly strong swing. The chiropractor should be able to do the necessary adjustments and manipulations.

The whole body can benefit from chiropractic treatment because most body ailments originate from an unhealthy back and spine. Needless to say, a golfer who is in shape and with a healthy back and spine will always outperform another who is not.

Some players head straight to a chiropractor to have their spine adjusted and manipulated after playing golf for the whole 18-hole game. There is quite a bit of controversy about this form of alternative medicine, but many have found it helpful in loosening up your joints and making your back stronger more supple.
