A bit of winter sun for a golfing holiday

By Thomas Amaretto

If last winter is anything to go by; the impassable roads, schools that were closed and that general air of resignation, then what better way this time round than combine winter sun with a golfing holiday? For those of your friends that might not be able to go, there's always a great selection of golf gifts to bring back. Now you wouldn't want to make them jealous would you?

Spanish navigator Juan de Bermudez rolled up to this island off the coast of America in 1505 to find it inhabited only by pigs. Now this island has more golf courses than fast food outlets; now if that doesn't appeal, what does? We're talking Bermuda of course; it's a British overseas territory these days, sits serenely in the North Atlantic and offers some of the best golf you could ever want or hope to play.

They play by the rules though. Whilst golf in Scotland may feel light years away, the attitude that is St Andrews golf still prevails. Strict dress codes are in force at all the clubs, right down to collars on your shirts. You'd get away with a snazzy pair of Bermudas providing they reach the knee and again something to bear in mind when considering golf gifts.

Many of the hotels work closely with the private golf clubs on the island, so you can take advantage of their corporate memberships to book your round. Alternatively for other courses you can book direct, or for the government owned ones, you make a call to a central booking agency. Be sure, they really want you here to play golf.

Obviously it's not golf in Scotland, but when the wind comes in off the Atlantic, St Andrews golf doesn't seem that far away! The greens in particular play slower and firmer than say in the United States. There's less irrigation here, although you may not think that with the number of water hazards out there waiting for you.

If the word Madeira used to conjure up visions of firstly cake and then wine, now the word golf springs to mind. It is certainly a growing destination for golfing holidays. There's everything from a 9 hole pitch and putt through to a 27 hole extravaganza for the real hardcore tourist.

It's a great spot. It's much nearer Africa than mainland Europe, over a million tourists visit the island every year and in the winter you'll have a steady 20 degree climate in which to operate. It's not by accident that Madeira bears the label of 'The Island of Eternal Spring'. Much of the interior of the island features a rugged mountainous landscape, peppered with lush green valleys and deep forests.

Roads to the coast are pretty good too. The coastline can be spectacular with rocky cliffs meeting sandy beaches and cute little bays. Stunning views will accompany your every shot, be it the warm Atlantic shore or that sub-tropical forest. Many other views will also surprise so keep golf gifts in your mind as a way of taking part of this beautiful island back with you.
