The best UK golf courses

By Al Johnson

Golf tourism is extremely popular and Britain can offer the keen golfer some truly amazing experiences out on the course. Wherever you decide to go in Britain, you can be guaranteed some great golf at world famous courses. And even better, with the popularity of golf on the rise many clubs and resorts are making some fantastic golf offers to entice the keen golfer to these shores.

Scotland is of course, the home of golf and whilst the other countries of Britain have equally famous courses such as Celtic Manor and The Belfry, playing at a golf club or resort in Scotland is a dream for many golfers both from home and abroad. St. Andrews is undoubtedly the most famous golf club in the world and playing there is actually a possibility. The Royal and Ancient is a private club but many of the links and other courses in and around the town are public meaning that it is easy to play there. The St Andrews Golf Club itself is also private but temporary membership can be arranged for those wanting to play there, though it is important to book tee times and accommodation packages well in advance as demand is always high.

While courses such as St Andrews and Celtic Manor are rightly famous, The Belfry is another top golf course providing exceptional facilities to the golf afficianado. Having said that, throughout the country there are a plethora of golf clubs and resorts large and small providing truly great golf to suit a wide range of budgets. Even the famous top end resorts, however, like Celtic Manor and St Andrews are not out of the reach of the ordinary golf fan thanks to the attractive golf offers and packages now available.

With such a number of golf courses and offers available, choosing the correct one can be difficult. However, experts tend to agree on the list of 'must play' sites. St Andrews of course, tops that list but other well known courses are The Ailsa on the Westin Turnberry Resort. This resort, as well as providing fabulous golf, is in a spectacular setting and caters for non-golfing guests too. The Ailsa course itself has held a number of high profile championships. The Kintyre Course and the Arran Course are also available. All of this is set on a rugged coastline.

Carnoustie is also a wonderful place to play golf. It is not only one of the oldest golf courses in the world but also recognised as one of the toughest. The links are open to everyone making it a very popular place despite the wildness and ruggedness of the surroundings. The Golf Hotel and Spa provides everything for the discerning golfer including some tempting golf offers.

The first recognised Welsh golf club was established in Tenby in 1888 and golf can still be enjoyed in this stretch of West Wales. LPGA events have also been held at Machynys Peninsula and both these resorts have some great golf offers.

There are three courses within the Mid Wales region and whilst not having the grandeur or the fame of The Belfry and St Andrews, they do offer attractive golf amid fantastic scenery. This is ideal for the golfer who likes to get away from it all and just wants to enjoy golf in peaceful surroundings. The golf offers available from this area of Wales are exceptional.

North Wales is not just castles and is home to some great courses, such as The Vale of Llangollen GC as well as some challenging links in Llandudno. St Andrews and The Belfry may have the fame and the kudos but there are plenty of other golfing opportunities available not only in Wales but also everywhere in the UK.
