Why Outdoor Sports Are Important

By Teddy Q. Xavier

Life is not a walk in the park. Life can be filled with anxiety, frustration, and stress. Unless you find some kind of outlet, you can potentially create some serious health problems. It can be tough to see the light at the end of the tunnel if you are caught in the daily grind. One way to greatly alleviate the built up stress is to participate in sports. If you take a look at the word "recreation," it is built from the prefix "re" and the stem "create." So it basically means to "create again." And this is exactly what you do when you participate in sports. By the time you finish reading this article, you'll learn why.

One big reason to participating in outdoor sports is that being in the sun is simply healthy. Humans have developed the ability to extract vitamin D from the sunlight. Various experiments have shown that prolonged exposure to environments devoid of any sunlight can lead to a host of physical and emotional conditions. It's also a well known fact that more people commit suicide in winter. It is thought because during winter, there is much less sunlight.

Another powerfully compelling reason to participate in sports is that it can be a great stress reducer. Physical exertion has long been recognized as a key component of stress reduction. Those that participate in sports or other physical activity on a regular basis are more likely to show decreased signs of stress.

Participating in sports opens you up to all the benefits of competition. When you compete in sports, you are increasing your ability to focus and concentrate on a goal. This is easily transferable into other areas of your life. Competition has also been shown to significantly increase the strength of your nervous system, which can keep you much healthier.

Another reason you should play some kind of outdoor sport is there are so many, and they are accessible to people with all different levels of skill. Even if you are a complete beginner, there are plenty of places for you to get started. Even if you don't even know what kind of sport to get started with, there are likely plenty of community organizations that can help you out.

Doing the same thing day in and day out can get pretty monotonous, boring, and potentially dangerous. When you practice some kind of outdoor sport, you break your boring habits and find a way to burn off all that extra steam. Once you get started, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.
