Hit Longer Off The Tee

By Kevin Maxem

When you can drive the ball far and straight, it makes you feel great. To hit those drives that you wish for, your body and swing must all work together and be in sync.

Accuracy is just as crucial as hitting for distance. There is not a golfer out there, who does not want to hit the ball for both distance and accuracy. You can do this with practice.

Do not think hitting the ball straight, means on a line perfect. If you are like most golfers, you likely have a natural fade or draw. A straight ball, is pretty close to where you were aiming.

Also, when we say far, this could mean different things to different people. To some people, 150 yards is killin' it. While others will hit the ball 300 yards. We will now take a look at how we can get more distance and accuracy.

The set-up is where we will begin:

One of the most important aspects of your swing, is your set-up. Pick a target, and align your body to it. Bend at the waist and bend your knees slightly. If you are a right hand golfer, you need to place the ball roughly 4 1/2" left of center. Take your proper grip. Relax, and let your arms hang below your shoulders.

Swing tempo is our next issue:

You can actually overswing. On your backswing, slow your tempo down. At the peak of your backswing, hesitate for a couple of seconds. This will let you begin your downswing with your hips, followed by your shoulders and arms. An increase in clubhead speed, will add distance to your drives. To achieve this, you need to incorporate your whole body in your swing. Every part of your body must be in sync and meet at impact.

Now let's talk about balance:

If you want to hit longer straighter drives you must remain balanced. Staying balanced is important and it all begins with your set-up and swing speed. Trying to swing too fast, will not only make you lose your balance, but, your distance and accuracy will also suffer.

Work on your accuracy first, before trying to gain more distance.

Hitting the ball really far into the the trees, will do you more harm than good in most cases.

Your local golf pro can help you with your swing.
