2 Simple Steps To Hit The Golf Ball Longer

By Matthew Seppanen

Golfers envy PGA Tour professionals because they hit their drives 300 yards. This article will help understand what makes the ball go far and give you two drills to help you reach your distance potential.

We need to understand which clubs are built for distance and which clubs are built for accuracy. In general, the five iron through the wedges are intended for accuracy. Conversely the driver, fairway woods, hybrids and long irons are built to be hit a maximum distance. Keep this in mind on your quest for distance.

Two factors determine how far the golf ball goes. How fast was the club head moving through impact? How solid did you hit the ball on the club face?

First, golfers need to strike the ball solid to create distance. Swing speed is irrelevant without solid contact. Hitting the golf ball squarely on the middle of the club face always results in greater distance than an off center hit.

Try this quick drill to work on solid contact. Place masking tape on the face of your club and hit five to ten shots. Look at the masking tape as it will provide immediate feedback as to the quality of contact you are making with the ball. Strive to consistently make contact on the club's sweet spot.

Try these basics to improve your contact with the golf ball:

1. If the contact is low on the face, you are trying to help the ball into the air. Hit down more on the ball to compress the ball and make it fly farther.

2. If contact is being made on the toe of the club your club is getting closer to your body at impact. Try placing a tee in ground narrowly inside your club at address. Make swings working on hitting the ball without contacting the tee. The opposite works with a tee towards the toe of your club if you are contacting the ball off the heel.

The second distance factor is club head speed. Ideally, a golfer will have his or her club moving fastest through the hitting zone. What often happens is the golfer gets anxious and swings really hard from the top of the backswing. The result is the club head moving faster to start the downswing that at impact.

A quick fix is to hold your driver near the club head and make some practice swings. Pay attention to the sound of the club, the noise will be loudest when the club is moving the fastest. To hit the ball great distances make sure that the club is loudest through the hitting area. This will help you make sure the golf club is accelerating through impact.

Try these two simple drills to help you drive the golf ball farther.
