St. Andrews: A Popular Vacation Destination

By Bruce Figart

Found in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, one of New Brunswick's and North America's premier vacation destinations, the internationally famous Fairmont Algonquin Resort has been inviting visitors for at least a century.

Named one of Canada's Top 10 Public Gardens and an Attractions Canada national winner for best developed outdoor attraction, Kingsbrae Garden, a majestic 27 acre horticultural masterwork snuggled inside the center of Saint Andrews is open daily for everyone to enjoy from mid May till October. With over 40,000 trees, shrubs and perennials, a remarkable view of Minister's Island and overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay, the continually changing garden extends a natural invitation to return often.

Established in 1964 and found inside Centennial House, a former general store on the Saint Andrews' waterfront, Sunbury Shores is, as its name suggests, a meeting place for the study, practice and appreciation of fine art and craft, for natural history study and for conservation education.

The Centre offers a year round exhibition gallery, as well as artist's studios, a pro printing shop, library, children's nature room, pottery studio, children's programs, nature excursions and a globally recognized summer art school featuring famous artists as instructors each year.

The active and the venturesome will find a treasure house of adventure in St. Andrews by-the-Sea. Be it seaside golf, a dozen of whale-watching vessels with an equal number of whale species to view, or a relaxing stroll around our historic community with a thorough walking map, Saint Andrews offers something for everyone. Other activities include sea canoeing, hiking, trails to spectacular lookout points, tennis, fishing, river cruising, scuba diving, guided walking tours, a considerable number of parks and open spaces for picnics, and children's play-grounds.

While golf has been played in these parts since 1890, the new course that was created in 1998 became operational in July 2000. The golfer will capture impressive vistas of the St. Croix River and then as they come down the slope of the tricky, wind-swept par 3, 12th hole, will be afforded a sweeping view of the Saint Andrews harbour. By the time they reach the Clubhouse, situated on a knoll looking out over the town and Navy Island, they will have earned a well deserved break. Enjoy!
