Gran Canaria Golf Holidays - Important Points To Consider

By Ian Reed

Off the northwest coast of Africa, in the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean, rest the Canary Islands. This chain is an autonomous archipelago of Spain and enjoys a robust tourism industry. Gran Canaria is the second most populous island in the chain and maintains a healthy tourist trade of its own. One of the main sources of this income is the island's golf courses. Golf has long been a favorite sport of those looking to enjoy a sunny day while testing their skills on the links. In recent years, golf has risen dramatically in popularity, and many people take in the sights and experience of golf on Gran Canaria. When should you go? Where should you play?

There really is not a bad time to play golf in Gran Canaria. The weather cooperates year round, allowing golfers to try their hand at obtaining a new low score whenever they wish. If you want to have the course a little more to yourself, however, you might want to go during the winter months which is the area's off season so to speak. There are fewer vacationers and tourists crowding the fairways at this time. Summer is when the industry picks back up, and you might find yourself waiting between shots a little more than you like.

Spain's oldest golf club is found on Gran Canaria and presents a challenge to experts and novice golfers alike. It is named the Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas and was opened in December of 1891. Mackenzie Ross designed the course and it sits at the foot of an extinct volcano. This ancient mountain provides breathtaking scenery to this 18-hole, par 71 course, one that provides instructors to help your game as well as a swimming pool, hotel, and tennis courts.

El Cortijo Club de Campo has hosted several championships and tournaments including the Senior and Women's Spanish Championships. It is an 18-hole, par 72 course that began entertaining guests in 2000. Though quite new, El Cortijo Club de Campo is already a favorite of guests of Gran Canaria. Blake Stirling and Marco Martin designed the course to provide a varied experience to players. Six tee locations are found on each hole, and a golf school, putting green, and bunker practice area are provided so that golf enthusiasts can improve their game.

Newer players still sharpening their game will enjoy Oasis Golf. This course is a small scale American style experience that provides all of the hazards that are found on a course that is regulation size. It possesses a par of 54, allowing players to work on their game without getting frustrated. Novices might prefer Las Palmeras Golf, an 18-hole, par 3 course. There are many challenges offered at Gran Canaria's array of golf courses, and that makes them popular with visitors to the island year round.
