Gaining More Balance

By Troy Jones

Having good balance seems like a fairly simple thing. All golfers know that balance is very important in their game. Having good balance is definitely more important than having a good stance.

Optimal balance depends on three aspects - your visual perception, the signals from the inner ear, and signals from your muscles and joints. If these signals are out of synchrony, you can experience a balance disorder.

A lack of balance usually occurs when your head position changes - which is a good reason to keep your head still during your swing!

Migraines can also be at fault if you experience balance disorder. Recurring migraines must be evaluated by a physician. These type of headaches can adversely affect your game.

Rather than buying all sorts of gadgets to improve your balance, you should instead take a look at the drugs you routinely take, to make sure they are not the culprit in your balance disorder. "Ear poisoning" can certainly affect your level of balance. Some medications such as the antibiotic Gentamicin, list "ear poisoning" as one of their side effects. Ear poisoning to some extent has been reported by up to 50% of people taking this antibiotic.

You can also experience this problem if you take diuretics. So if you're on any medicine and you start feeling dizzy, get medical help! Sometimes the dizziness can literally become a lifelong problem, so don't delay in seeking help.

If your balance is a little off in your game, you may want to do some simple exercises to improve it. Just kicking a ball around your backyard can help. Setting up a small obstacle course could be another fun idea. Your kids will have fun with the course, too! They might be so excited about it that they might even set it up for you.

You can also buy a balance board to help you with your center of gravity. We once bought one of these - handmade and used - on eBay. The whole family can have fun with these boards!

In addition, working with flexibility exercises helps increase your balance by releasing muscle tension. Some yoga exercises can go a long way loosening tight muscles.

You might even enjoy using a yoga or exercise ball. Sitting on these balls helps improve your balance as well, and it is something you can do throughout the day. Continue practicing in small increments until you can sit on the ball for 30 minute stretches. Using these balls increases mobility in your lower back, betters your posture, and generally improves control of your body core.

Balance is a key factor in improving your game, so it is worth spending a little time each day improving it. You might be positively surprised when your game and your score dramatically improve.
