Advice for golfing in winter

By Norg Gardener

Playing golf is becoming more popular every year. It makes sense then that there are also more unusual and thrilling golf gifts for men to suit every taste. Everybody needs more tees, golf balls and socks; combine these with a bottle of single malt and you have a winner. Novelty golf balls that burst into a puff of smoke when they are struck or that move erratically on the putting green will cause much entertainment.

The practical man will appreciate some wet weather gloves to give him a good sturdy grip on a wet club. Golf-themed cuff links are popular golf gifts for men. Gift hampers are always appreciated, especially when they are individually made up; include snacks, a mug with a personal message, a bottle of good whiskey and perhaps a soft toy. Executives will enjoy putting in the office using an indoors golf set; a stationery caddy in the shape of a miniature golf bag will keep his pen handy on his desk.

The careful golfer will enjoy the St Andrews gift set containing a score card holder, a pitch mark repairer, a magnetic Sherpashaw ball marker and a belt clip. Books on golf, some available as e-books, will much improve his game. For some golf art; a neatly framed fine art print of St Andrews will look good on his wall. Another gift idea is a puzzle of Bobby Jones teeing off circa 1920.

Winter golfing in the UK is becoming very popular. Taking advantage of specially reduced packages, you get to play on the greatest courses, yet pay much less than in peak season. A combination of wonderful courses and excellent accommodation makes up special weekend deals of UK golf breaks for up to three days. Lodgings offer three, four or five star comfort and these packages are often fully booked some time in advance.

If you purchase the St Andrews package, it includes three rounds on the Links and one on the Old Course. You also receive a voucher redeemable for food and beverages at a number of club houses in the vicinity. The Links Golfing Academy employs a PGA professional that presents lessons to interested golfers. If a group books their lessons together, there is a diminished fee per participant on a sliding scale.

Popular areas such as Cheshire, Warwickshire and Lincolnshire have packages available that include lodgings with four star accommodation. These usually present their guests with breakfast and dinner; the venues are often spa resorts with excellent facilities. One night packages can also be booked, which include two rounds of golf on the local course.

For those in search of five star grading, an area such as Newport has this available at lower rates than in season. This is all part of the attraction of winter UK golf breaks. For three star accommodation which still represents very good value and facilities, Warwickshire and Worcestershire are good options. Non-golfers can go shopping or sight-seeing and need never be bored.

Golfers intending to book any UK golf breaks in winter, will find there are many options available. Depending on what exactly is included in the package, prices vary from 60 per person per night to about 130, with dinner, bed and breakfast included. It will be worthwhile to take your time before deciding where you would like to book your winter break. You will need to book well in advance as winter golfing has become increasingly popular in the UK lately.
