Using Laser Range Finder

By Alek Gulev

A laser range finder employs a laser beam to determine the distance from the location of the device to the location of another object. The most commonly produced device that works as a laser range finder is one that is designed to operate on the time of flight principle. The time of flight principle is measured by taking a laser pulse that is contained in a narrow beam and shooting it at an object. The device will measure the amount of time it takes for the pulse of light to reach the object in question and be returned to the light source.

This device can frequently be found on airplanes and helicopters, especially those airplanes and helicopters that are used for search and rescue missions, or by the forestry service to look out for forest fires. A laser range finder can be used when you need to determine the things that are located beneath the canopy of the trees, and it can be used when you need to know the distance to the ocean floor from the top of the reflective watery surface above.

The military uses many different types of the laser range finder. They use the ones that can be mounted to aircraft, and they also use handheld versions of this device. The handheld laser range finder is often equipped with such tools as a digital magnetic compass, and an inclinometer, that is capable of telling the user the inclination and the length of possible targets. The laser range finder that is handheld is frequently used in conjunction with binoculars.

Another common use for the laser range finder is in the 3-D modeling process. By using different algorithms they can set these devices to view the distance and the depth of objects from several different angles and create an accurate 3-D image or model.

On construction sites the laser range finder is used in much of the same way that the tape measure is used. The tape measure has always been used to measure the distance from one point to another so the construction crew could tell how much material they might need for a given project. The only difference is the laser range finder can be worked by just one person and if you needed to measure a long distance with a tape measure you would need two people to do so.

People who participate in the sport of archery often use a laser range finder, as do some of the hunters that hunt with guns. Golf players also make use of these devices to determine distance between their ball and the hole they are aiming for.
