Requirements to start a virtual golf facility

By Joe Maldonado

You may have played golf in an indoor golf facility or you may have thought of setting up a golf facility of your own. In any case, you may have often wondered about what exactly are the requirements for a virtual golf center. Read on to find out more about the features that are a part of a golf center.
The first thing that you may have noticed in a virtual golf center is the sensor mat. Even if it resembles the greens on a golf course, you may not be aware that the sensor mat does more than just support your weight. It actually detects or tracks every movement of the club head, the ball and position of the golfer. It is made of synthetic grass that gives a feeling of real grass and it is equipped with high speed optical sensors that detect everything from position to swing to movement.

High speed putting sensors and camera systems ensure every movement and swing is captured so that ball launch angles are perfectly captured and the golfer or amateur who is still learning the ropes of the game knows where exactly he is going wrong.

The number of screens used in a virtual golf facility can vary depending upon the size of the gaming facility. There could be just one screen where graphics are used to give you a feel of moving around the course or there could be several screens that surround the playing area or sensor mat to give you a 3D feel. The high performance graphics that are increasingly being used in modern virtual golf gaming centers make a golfer feel he is actually in one of the professional golf courses in the world.

The ball that you hit onto the screen falls to the floor after it hits the screen. But the image of the ball continues from the point of impact and stops at the point on screen according to its speed. Screen images are so life-like that you may find the ball image bouncing off a tree or obstacle where the ball image moves in that direction.

Did you know there are some high performance graphics used in some virtual golf systems that have cameras that fly you along the ball's path and every movement including hooks, pushes, slices, pulls, fades and even draws are instantly depicted giving you a feel of realism.

What is even better about virtual golf systems is that you can even design your own golf courses! This could never be possible on a real golf course. If you can afford a high end virtual golf system, you can add various features such as textures, height and light maps that depict topographic details, and other 3D graphics that allow you to integrate as much realism in the gaming facility as possible.

Virtual golf simulators can be set up at home where the space needed may be just a corner of a room or it could be set up in a large resort where many players can play virtual golf at the same time.
