Golf: As Straightforward As Learning To Ride A Bike

By Alex Kelly

Can you remember learning the way to ride a bike? You most likely spent plenty of time practicing - generally learning how not to fall off - till you mind was able to blend the necessary balance and motor skills so you might just do it without thinking. After you learned how to ride a bike - you learned how to peddle, to balance, and to steer - you never forget how.

This learned skill is one of the most widely referenced examples of the brain recalling a learned and regularly rehearsed psychological pattern. Once your mind "gets it" your body can interpret that into the actual abilities. Other motor skills are learned in an analogous fashion by our minds, including golfing.

Professional golfers make use of a similar method to improve their golf. The technique, one of a collection commonly referred to as mental golf, is mental rehearsal. Using mental rehearsal any golfer, beginner or pro, can create the perfect mental environment for improving almost any area of their game. People from any sport can tap the power of their subconscious mind and achieve results way beyond those from physical practice alone.

Mental rehearsal is a technique to make and replay a mental movie of the result you would like to achieve. We have all seen pro golfers line up a putt. They rehearse their stance and their swing several times before proceeding to make the shot. What separates the pros from other golfers is that thay also practice the whole shot - from walking up to the ball to seeing the ball drop into the center of the cup - in their mind many times before really attempting it.

Mental Rehearsal is effective because your subconscious mind does not know the difference between a actual event and one you imagine. When you rehearse an event in your mind, the brain creates it by creating a neurological pattern in the same way it might a real event. You are then able to recall this when you run into this event in reality. By creating a desired result in your subconscious, you can create it easier in reality. It is just like riding a bike.
