Mike Austin was known as a long driver and in 1974 hit a drive for the history books. It is recognized as the longest drive ever hit in a sanctioned golf tournament and the record still stands today. When he was 64 years old Mike hit a drive that went an unheard of 515 yards. Was there something special about how his swing worked? It is worth looking into, isn't it?

Mike was very critical of what people were being taught to do in the golf swing. Mike Austin learned what the body parts should do in a correct swing. Most golf pros do not teach a golfer to move their body parts correctly. Let me show you some areas where Mike totally disagrees with conventional golf teaching.
The swing we see in use today has very little lateral motion. This will cause the head to move. Mike believed we should swing the lower spine laterally in both the backswing and the downswing, and then turn, a compound action he called it. This action creates a stable head position and a lot of lower body action into the swing.
Mike said "at the start of the downswing I give the club a throw, which gives me the jump on almost anyone else". Nearly any golf pro would tell you this is wrong. Most teachers tell us we need to "delay the release", storing up power for the hit. Mike explains that the there is a stimulus response time which requires starting the release from the top in order for the club to catch up to the left arm at impact.
Mike says the wrists release fully and immediately through impact. This is unlike conventional teaching, where we are encouraged to maintain a flat left wrist throughout the follow through. If you do keep the left wrist flat you will slow the club down to arm speed. If you let the wrists react naturally you will gain club head speed. The club is free to whip through the hit zone.
The Mike Austin method does not conform to you but rather you conform to it. The limited differences in how the swing looks when different people swing is due to the different body shapes.
