Important Tips about Starter Golf Equipment

By Andre Riggs

Beginners need a lot less golf equipment than they realize on average. Sure, there are a ton of bells and whistles that look like they'd be great fun to play with but you don't need most of those until you have a few game basics down. You won't benefit from the advanced equipment, anyway, until you've mastered the basics. As you pick out your starter kit, keep these important tools in mind.

A golf ball cleaning kit will get you off to a great start. Your golf balls will get unbelievably messy during a game. Clumps of dirt can affect the way your ball flies and the way it rolls once on the ground. In other words, dirty golf balls can have a huge impact on every aspect of the game. Most people can't afford to throw all their balls out and start over new after every game, this simple, inexpensive kit helps you save money and improve your game at the same time.

Ball markers are also important.

This equipment is especially important to have when playing in a group. These markers help you identify the place where your ball landed and came to a stop on the green without interfering with the play of the other people playing the hole with you. Golf etiquette dictates that the person farthest from the hole plays first. The play of the people before you could be disrupted by your ball if a marker is not used. It is important to have this inexpensive equipment when playing in a group.

The final piece of equipment you should invest in is a good set of beginner's golf clubs. This is not the time to go out and buy the priciest set of clubs the store has to offer. You won't know if you need to be using steel shafts or flexible shafts. The best height for you is something else you won't know at first. As a beginner, you're not ready to decide if a pair of gloves or new clubs will help you gain more control and get better distance.

When buying starter golf equipment, start small. Build the set that will help you achieve your goals on the course, buying the more expensive pieces one at a time after you've had time to learn more about the game and to practice more. Follow these tips to get the most value for your money when you first begin golfing.
