Killearn Lakes Plantation

By Michelle Manausa

Killearn Lakes Plantation has been a leading development in the growth of Tallahassee's Northeast Community. As an off-shoot of Killearn Estates, the first homes were built in the 1970's on what was once a working plantation. The developers established a subdivision that would stay true to the natural environment. Homes were built on wooded lots, so that homeowners could maintain the original oaks, pines, dogwood, azaleas and other native Florida vegetation.

Schools were soon constructed encouraging families to move to the area. Because of the close proximity to home, residents can enjoy the atmosphere of a neighborhood school where many children walk or bike to school daily. Killearn Lakes Elementary School, Deerlake Middle School and Chiles High School have been among Tallahassee's top rated schools with strong academic and athletic programs. Parents have been more than pleased with the educational opportunities available.

Within Killearn Lakes Plantation, there is a wonderful variety of communities to choose from. Smaller home layouts with square footage beginning around 1300 square feet are a popular draw for first time home buyers as well as retirees. There are also more expansive lots with spec and custom homes featuring pools and other special features.

Golden Eagle Plantation, a gated community, sits at the heart of Killearn Lakes Plantation. With a private members only country club, it boasts one of the Southeast's best golf courses, tennis program, dining club and pool. Golden Eagle homes feature some of Tallahassee's best new architecture with outstanding golf and lake views. Homeowners can choose from the wonderful activities of their club and community, including fishing and canoeing on Lake Diane.

In the past fifteen to twenty years, many commercial shopping and restaurant opportunities have been constructed in the area. Residents love the easy accessibility to Killearn Lakes Plantation. Large retails giants such as Publix, Target, Walmart, Kohl's, Walgreens and CVS offer residents grocery and home goods, pharmacy, furniture, apparel, auto service, and garden center. The area also has a Leon County Public Library Branch, several banks, fitness facilities, and plenty of upscale, casual and take out restaurants to choose from. Homeowners are delighted that everything they need and desire is just a short distance from home in Killearn Lakes Plantation.
