A General Idea on Achieving Fairway Woods Shot

By Cathy D McCann

When trying to hit fairway woods golfers might overshoot or even undershoot the mark they were hoping to hit. It can be very frustrating when the ball is flying through the air and does not hit the mark that was intended. Golfers know the shot is one of the toughest but any errors can be overcome. When making contact with the ball, be consistent and aware of the erroneous aspects.

When is it that a golfer makes up his mind about hitting to the fairway woods? It is usually while covering up for an earlier committed error or in an attempt to wriggle out of a pressure situation. Under these circumstances, the golfer either tries to hit a par 5 in 2 shots, makes an attempt to get the ball as close to the green from the fairway wood on a Par 5 or is making up for a poorly hit drive.

Since all these are desperate attempts, they often end up landing the golfer in a far deeper soup rather than bailing him out. Instead, being meticulous about hitting fairway woods and taking regular lessons regarding how to hit fairway woods could prove to be the solution as apart from improving the consistency of the golfer they would make him wiser to deal to difficult situations.

Failure to hit to fairway woods is usually attributed to three reasons namely buckling arms, also known as chicken wings, raising up and hanging back on the right side. When the golfer tries to put too much strength into his shot, his forearm muscles contract and buckle thus causing the shaft of the club to lag behind the clubface. Another possible consequence is the lifting of the club off the ground.

When a golfer is hitting the ball, they know just when to look up and follow it with their eyes. If there is too much force in the swing then the golfer will look up to soon. When hitting the ball it is necessary to use the lower body and the arms. If the golfer is only using their arms then they will hang on their right foot. When this happens the ball will overshoot the desired target.

When committing errors in a fairway woods shot, the ball will be in the air for to long. The best advice to remember is keep the arms outstretched when hitting the ball. Let the club make a wide arc while not leaning behind the ball when making the contact.

In order to learn how to hit fairway woods perfectly a lot of practice is required. By practicing regularly at home, the golfer can allow his arms to stretch out properly and hence one would be able to get the hang of the shot. It is also recommended that the golfer should try a few swings before making the actual fairway woods shot just to prepare one beforehand.

Once there is an improvement at making contact, hitting fairway woods shots does not seem to be as intimidating provided the arms are relaxed, the body turns a little faster and the swing traces a wider arc.
