Using A Golf Divot Repair Tool Shows Respect

By Kenny Johnson

A golfer is generally a very polite sportsman which may be hard to understand for those who do not play the game. However, most golfers respect other sportsman and they are particularly careful not to damage the playing area and try and leave it as they found it. Repairing a divot left by normal play is simple with the golf divot repair tool and will speed the healing of the damaged grass immensely.

Damage from balls hitting the grass is almost impossible to avoid that is a soft surface and the ball is hitting hard and fast. A player using an iron for a long drive may leave a patch of grass that has been scraped away as well as a scar where the grass was. It is considered appropriate in both those cases that the golfer repair divots they may have left behind.

The term divot can be confusing because it can be used to refer to the patch of grass scraped away by the iron as well as the impression made by the ball hitting the grass. The grass that has been scraped up can be returned without the use of a tool and most courses provide a cup of sand on the cart if that is the case the sand which is filled mixed with seed should be used to repair the divot.

The divot created by the impact of the golf ball on the surface of the grass will be a greater distance away and usually where the ball first hit the ground. On the way over to the ball the player should keep an eye out for the impact area as it may not be near where the ball finally came to a stop. It is always a good idea to take notice of where the ball first lands to be able to find it later.

A special tool is usually carried to help repair the damage from the divot created at impact and repairing these divots causes the healing process to begin almost immediately. A divot repair tool comes with a pronged end which is slid into the depression. The grass should be gently lifted upward without tearing the roots. When it has been lifted up it can be smoothed over and may well be undetectable.

There are some consequences for the rare golfer who forgets or ignores the common courtesy of divot repair. In most cases the staff at the course will attempt to educate the offender on the importance of repairing damage immediately. For repeat offenders the golfer can actually be ejected from the greens. A divot repair tool is one of those important courtesies in golfing.

A divot repair kit is probably the least expensive accessory a golfer may buy. It will however save dirty looks from other golfers and possible expulsion from the greens. It also will help assure the green is as flawless and beautiful the next visit as it was the first visit.
