Tennis Apparel For Women - Comfort And Fashion

By Ned Dagostino

Check out photos of women tennis players from the early years of the last century. Now check out today's players. The first thing you'll notice about the tennis apparel for women is that the skirts have become much shorter. There's one main reason for this, and it has nothing to do with looking good for the men watching. Women know the reason for the change is all about comfort.

There is no problem in finding a wide array of stylish tennis apparel for women these days. The designs are usually chosen from the range worn by iconic tennis players in the global tennis circuit. This tells you that while comfort, fit and quality are the top priorities, how the clothes look is not far behind. We know this because you will find media members writing not only about their game, but about their fashion as well. They write this because the public likes to read about it.

When tennis was played by women in England in the early years of the last century, formal clothing was the norm as the game was played on lawns. Women players sported full length clothes. Today however the game has become very professional and tennis has attained industry status with billions being spent on advertisements regularly. In those days, white loose fitting cotton fabrics provided comfort, but now, the multi colored synthetic fabrics are popular among women players worldwide.

Compared to other popular games, tennis is not a game where the outfits can be unisex. Men and women have to wear different clothing and the sports garment fashion industry is pulling no stops to vie with one another for getting a larger slice of the revenue. Tennis apparel for women is meant to make them feel great in all weather conditions and also make them look great. The apparel will fit snugly without affecting your performance.

Yes things are certainly different now. Whereas at one time only white was allowed, now just about every court allows multi-colored garments. Women are typically wearing skirts while men generally wear shorts. But even women can wear shorts since most courts now permit it.

So how do you choose your tennis apparel for women? If it's a skirt, look at the length and fit. Obviously you'll be uncomfortable if the skirt is too tight. On the other hand your performance will suffer if the skirt is too loose also.

Tennis is no longer an ordinary sport. It's highly competitive and athletes continue to get better. If you want to compete, you need to feel comfortable as you jump, twist, cut and swing. Even though tennis apparel for women is loose fitting, it should be not too loose for comfort. Lightness in fabric is required to withhold moisture. While playing tennis, the last thing you want is for your clothing to affect your performance. And of course you want to look good too!
