Golf Tournament Trophies Can Be Unusual Or Tried And True

By Ken Johnson

Golf tournament trophies are symbols given to a winner who has triumphed over a course or their own personal limitations. While trophy styles vary in styles and sizes some very simple items have become models for these cherished mementos. The oldest trophy in golf was the British open which had a claret jug as a trophy, is hardly usual and yet, fitting.

The more traditional styles of trophies consist of figures who are golfing caught in mid swing and may be made of metal over a wood base or solid wood or even crystal. A gold plated golf ball might be one of the more extravagant types of trophies. Trophies are rarely desired for their beauty, though many can be gorgeous, while others might be difficult to identify. Instead they are desired for the symbol of a winner no matter how small or large the tournament might be.

Everyday items may at times serve as extremely desirable tournament trophies. One such case is the U. S. Masters Green Jacket which though hardly unique is extremely desired because it goes only to the winner of the U. S Masters. The green jacket is worn by the current year winner and then returned to the club where the winner is entitled to wear it when they visit Augusta. A small gold medal is also awarded and doubtless has a place of pride in the trophy case.

The Abu Dhabi tournament trophy tends to be somewhat unusual and large. It consists of a silver metal base with a life sized gold golf ball atop it, and atop that an eagle. However, it may not be the most traditional of trophies this too is a symbol of triumph. It is unlikely that the player was kissing that particular trophy though.

Similarly, the Dubai Desert Classic trophy is non-traditional and very large. This exquisitely crafted silver eastern style container is more than half the size of the player attempting to lift it in 2009. That particular golf trophy would take up a great deal of mantle space.

There simply is no real standardized trophy and there should not be in most people's opinions. These prizes are valued for their symbol and coveted despite any value they may or may not hold. The most beautiful and the least attractive trophy would doubtless be displayed with equal pride by the winner.

Nothing in any rule book written says that a trophy has to be a certain size or to appeal to a certain group of viewers. In the eyes of the player a green jacket or a miniature of the Barclay bank are both prizes and both deserve equally prominent spots. A trophy need not be a symbol directly related to golf, it can be anything but it is still a treasure beyond price for the winning golfer.
