Killarney is an Ideal Holiday Destination for the Golfers.

By Edmond Murray

Anyone planning a golf holiday should give serious consideration to visiting Killarney because they will find no less than four top grade courses in the area as well as three nine hole courses.

Lackabane was opened in 1999 and is a parklands course with spectacular views of the lakes at some of the holes. It is a moderately difficult Par 72 course with many water hazards, bunkers and some severe slopes off the greens. The Irish Ryder Cup Challenge and the Ladies Open have been played on this course. It is 7050 yards (6410 metres) long.

Golfers can be distracted by the stunning scenery at the 18th hole of the O'Mahonys Point course. Many consider this course to be the least challenging of the three and is great for a relaxing round of golf. Novices will find it difficult enough as it is 6800 yards and has some tricky hazards.

The Killeen course is the most important and is the course on which the big tournaments are played. It is the longest of the three courses in the club and also the most challenging with difficult hazards, long holes and fast greens. This is where the world's top golfers like to play and The Irish Open has been held there on a number of occasions. Set in between the mountains with excellent views of the lakes the tournament makes for excellent television viewing.

Beaufort Golf Resort is located about six miles from the town and is set at the base of the MacGillycuddy Reeks is a tree lined park. This has been newly developed in the past few years and is fast gaining a great reputation among golfers. This Par 71 course can be played by all grades of golfer.

The three 9-hole courses are also of very high standard and more suitable for beginners or for those who do not feel up to the rigours of an 18-hole round. Dunloe course is beside the Dunloe Castle Hotel with The Gap of Dunloe in the background. The Castlerosse course is part of The Castlerosse Hotel Leisure Complex with the lakes in the background. The Ross course is considered to be one of the best 9-hole courses in the country and is located near Killarney Race Course on the way to Ross Castle.

Golfers will notice that within an hour's drive from the town there are located even more world class courses. Ballybunion which has two world class links courses has been played by many of the rich and famous and is a favourite of one of the world's greatest golfers, Tom Watson.

Other excellent courses in the area are Waterville, Tralee, Ceann Sibeal (Dingle) and Waterville.
