Features that Sway Selecting a Golf Putter

By Jason Reardon

To select a putter, one needs to know the art and science of selecting it. First of all, there is no putter that can make a person great golfer. It is the skill and practice that can make a great golfer. But when choosing a putter, it is better to have enough knowledge about selecting a putter so that the golf putter selected is compatible with your style and also provides you with the sound and feel you really need.

The Putter Style Types - Putters are of three styles with each one of them having their own merits. The modern blade putter is a replica of the old design which was traditionally used for putting. This style is generally suitable for highly skilled golfers.

Karsten Solheim brought in the Pinger Anser putter in 1966. This has now become a modern standard for putters and the design is widely copied in many putters. This is a flange heel-toe weighted putter which has the advantage of more forgiveness and can be used easily when compared to the classic blade putter.

The face-Balanced mallet putter is another style of putter. This style of putter is the most forgiving of all the three styles.

Moment of Inertia (MOI) - To reduce the twisting of the putter head caused during collision with ball, there are a number of efforts being made and these efforts have a major role in designing the putter.

The putter which has a higher moment of inertia has reduced movement when it is being hit by the ball off the center.

Shafting - The shaft of the putter gets into the putter head through the heel or the center. Hosel design and shaft shape are of several variations.

It is found that straight-in centered shaft putters are much better due to the reduced effect of twisting of the putter face they cause. This is the same principle that is used in the designing a hammer which has a shaft at the center of the head.

Cost - This is perhaps the least important factor. Considering the wrong putter is expensive at any price and considering the price of the other clubs in your bag this will most likely be the cheapest of them all. Yet, you will use this club more than those expensive, high-tech drivers.

Inserts - Many putters will have some type of insert. These inserts will provide a different feel to the putter over solid based putters. An insert should not affect your accuracy but may affect how the ball rolls.

Alignment Aids - Putting has a number of difficulties, one of which is aiming it in a correct way. There are a number of manufacturers now who mention that their putter has superior aiming aids.

With most marketing claims these should reviewed with a little skepticism. They may work for some people and not with others. Just take a moment to view the aides and see if they help you line with your aim. If not don't use them or select a different club.
