Enjoy The Benefits From Practice Putting Greens

By Bruce Mcgillivray

On each hole, putting is the culmination of all your labor funneled down to a single stroke. Putting is like a science and must be meticulously rehearsed over and over in preparation for those clutch situations on the green. It's the most overshadowed part of golf and can make or break a golfer.

While it is an important part of the game, putting is not practiced enough. Perhaps you missed a major short putt and are frustrated with your putting. Or maybe you find it more fun to hit the driving range when you are practicing. In any event, every golfer knows the primary key to getting better is to develop your short game.

"Putting is like wisdom," Arnold Palmer once said. "Partly a natural gift and partly the accumulation of experience." For the majority of us, putting is not a natural gift. So, a practice putting green can help every golfer accumulate important experience.

Some practice putting greens are beneficial. The types you find at friends houses are useful for basic strokes on flat greens, yet not all greens are level. Every golfer knows greens have curvature: slopes, slants and breaks. Simple level putting systems that shoot the ball back to you don't really capture the realism of actual putting.

Real greens are mimicked by more modern practice putting greens. You're provided the chance to practice those tricky breaking putts with adjustable practice putting greens. They enable you to modify the topography of the green so you can angle you putts based on the break.

Not only can the slope of the practice putting green be altered, but the pin may be adjusted as well. Additionally, the surface allows the golf ball to roll smoothly and accurately, as if on an actual green. After all, the goal of a practice putting green is to recreate the putting experience you have out on the course.

Chipping is almost as important as putting. How many times have you made a good approach only to find your golf ball has fallen off the green? Being good with your wedges can give you more confidence and, ultimately, make the difference in your round of golf. But like putting, it deserves a lot of practice. Practice putting greens usually come with chipping mats because of that very reason. They allow you to chip to the putting green and watch the ball break toward the cup. It is also a good opportunity to master how the ball comes off the face of the wedge and how it reacts.

Most practice putting greens are available in a number of different sizes so you can fit them indoors or outdoors; in your basement, or in your workplace. So don't let your short game ruin a long drive or an excellent approach. Practicing your putting with the right tools can help you gain confidence, make more putts and improve your handicap. Like the age old golfing proverb says, even God has to practice His putting.
