Have The Chipping Yips Got You Blue?

By Tom Harris

The chipping yips are a golfer's worst nightmare.

Are you suffering from the chipping yips? Don't worry, you are not the only one. A lot of pro golfers have suffered the consequences of having the chipping yips. Check out the video below which discusses what causes the yips and what you can do to fix them. It's sad how easily we can all be affected!

A golfers worst nightmare are the chipping yips. It's been tested that those suffering from the yips, on average, add 5.5 shots to their golf game. 5.5 shots!!

The physical reactions of having the chipping yips include freezing, twitching, jerks and tremors. All of which can prove to be very uncomfortable, let alone embarrassing. These last two elements add to your anxiety and self-consciousness, along with your metal distress. The chipping yips have a tendency to stick with a golfer for a long period of time and many pro golfers have quit the game because of it!

But what I know is that the golfer starts to focus on what is causing the chipping yips. They become so involved in trying to deduce what started the yips that their entire golf game starts to have a negative effect. The conditions that result from having the yips are involuntary. Even if you attempt to control them, you just can't. Not to mention what is remaining of your game!

So what can you do?

First you want to understand that the golf chipping yips, or more correctly the 'yips', affect other players in different sports and professions. Many dart players, cricket players, dentists, typists, and musicians have all suffered from the yips.

Many players however, do get cured from their afflictions. With little signs for yips, they enjoy the game again.

How do you achieve this?

Some medical researchers say that chipping yips in golfers are caused by an underlying emotional factor. Many doctors have been using a process that is very similar to acupuncture which has been giving great results. A few tests were run on some golfers who had the chipping yips on about 70% of their shots. After treatment, this rate decreased dramatically. Many of the golfers that were concerned had reported not feeling any type of jerking or freezing sensations in their arms or hands.

What this means for you as a golfer is that if you are suffering from the chipping yips, and you should analyze how you are feeling. Have you become so stressed out over your chipping yips, that this one factor is the cause of your problem? Worrying a lot over the yips has been proven to make things worse, not better.

Your best course of action would be to take some time to practice your shots outside of a golf game. Once you take off the pressure, you can easily concentrate on perfecting your chip shots and short game.

Maybe, you have just been taking the game of golf too seriously. Take a breath and remember why you started playing golf in the first place. Start enjoying golf once again and relax.
