Dealing With The Chipping Yips

By Danny Ward

The chipping yips are a golfer's worst nightmare.

Are you having issues with chipping yips in golf? Don't be scared, you are not alone. Many pro players have suffered the consequences of having the chipping yips. Check out the video below which talks about what causes the yips and what you should do to fix them. Its pretty scary how badly and how easily we all can be affected!

A golfers worst nightmare are the chipping yips. It's been tested that those suffering from the yips, on average, add 5.5 shots to their game. 5.5 shots!!

The physical reactions of having the chipping yips include freezing, twitching, jerks and tremors. All of which can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. These last two elements will add to your mental distress, along with self-consciousness and anxiety. The chipping yips have a tendency to stick with a golfer for a long period of time and many pro golfers have quit the game because of it!

But what I have seen is that the golfer will start to focus on what is causing the chipping yips. They become so involved in trying to deduce what started the yips that their entire golf game starts to have a negative effect. What results from the chipping yips are involuntary. Even if you try to control them, you just can't. Not to say the remainder of your game!

So what can you do?

First you want to understand that the golf chipping yips, or more correctly the 'yips', affect other players in different sports and professions. Many dart players, cricket players, dentists, typists, and musicians have all suffered from the yips.

One interesting thing is though, that many players are getting cured of their affliction. They are enjoying the game once again, with no signs of the chipping yips returning.

How do you achieve this?

Some medical researchers say that chipping yips in golfers are caused by an underlying emotional factor. Many doctors have been using a process that is very similar to acupuncture which has been giving great results. A few tests were run on some golfers who had the chipping yips on about 70% of their shots. After treatment, this rate decreased dramatically. Many of the golfers that were concerned had reported not feeling any type of jerking or freezing sensations in their arms or hands.

What this means for you as a player is that if you are suffering from the chipping yips. Have you become so stressed out over your chipping yips, that this is causing you to dislike playing golf? Worrying obssessvely over the yips has been proven to make things worse, not better.

Your best course of action would be to take some time to practice your shots outside of a golf game. Pressure of making the shot has vanished, add you can easily concentrate on perfecting your chip shots and short game.

Maybe, you have just been taking the game of golf too seriously. Take a breath and remember why you started playing golf in the first place. Start enjoying golf once again and relax.
