Tee Choices For You: Wooden, Plastic, And Brush

By Terry Garcia

Tees were not immediately used when golf was first played. Somebody must have innovated having the ball sit in atop a small piece of wood to make a hit easier. They probably didn't know that in the future, tees would be manufactured by numerous companies.

Tees made of wood are still popular today. Golfers love to have them emblazoned with their own name and the fact that they're easily splintered on impact doesn't phase most people who are addicted to the links. Some golfers are unwilling to change the kind of tees they use.

Plastic tees are similar to wooden tees, but the former won't chip like the latter. Plastic tees can also be monogrammed with the golfer's name or initials, so they're a popular choice, but not quite as inventive as the brush tees are.

Brush tees are quite new as compared to the other tee varieties. If you use a brush tee, the suspension of the ball is similar to when it's resting on the grass. If you're a golfer, then you know how good it feels when you approach your tee shot and see it perfectly lifted off of the ground by blades of grass that allow you to make a smooth stroke as you approach the green.

Using a brush tee gives you the feeling that your ball is just sitting on the grass. There's no resistance (no matter how slight) as there is when you hit a wooden or plastic tee.

As shown in studies, the use of brush tees causes better shots. The brush tee causes no impact between it and the club.

A little worry or distraction can affect a golfer's game.

You can buy brush tees to suit your club selection, such as tees for your driver, tees for your other woods, and some other sizes you might want to use on a par-3 if you're teeing up for an iron shot.
