Prime Golf Gear You Actually Want

By Vivian Summers

It's easy to go over what you need when shopping for golf equipment. A beginner might be overwhelmed and tempted by all of the gadgets and equipment. You should not rush out with an open wallet. The first is that, until you have been playing for quite a while, you don't need the most expensive, latest and greatest equipment. The second is that you may find you don't really love golf as much as you thought you would - and you don't want to waste tons of money on dust-collecting stuff. Keep this in mind and only buy the stuff you need, not the stuff you want.

You only really need the wedgers, irons, putters, and drivers. Make sure you know which club is which and what they are used for. You can consult local golf shops for assistance on what you will need as a beginner. Consider renting or borrowing clubs while you honestly gauge your actual interest in the sport - will you be playing often or will it be a once in a while kind of thing? A lot of golf shops will offer secondhand clubs, which is particularly good for beginners. Begin with a basic set until you get the feel of the game. Your budget will also have a say in this. You will also want a bag for the clubs. You may opt for a bag with a trolley. Your local golf store should have some deals for beginners or used sets.

Whether or not they have cleats, you will need good shoes. Some courses will not allow cleats. You'll be walking miles in these shoes, so make sure you like them. Dress codes are also usually enforced at golf courses. Consider the amount of time you plan to play. You may only need one pair of golf pants and two shirts to begin with.

A new rule book is a must because all of golf's rules will confuse a novice. Learning etiquette and rules are vital.

You must also buy golf balls. Again, if you are a beginner, you should not buy the most expensive golf balls in the store. Not only will their technology be wasted on you until you have improved your game, you are likely to lose many of them in the first few months of playing - rather lose the cheap balls than the pricey ones. Also purchase tees, a towel, a green marker, and a pencil.

Any other gadgets, such as a watch that keeps your score for you, rubber suction cups to lift your ball from the hole and so on are really not necessary, and can definitely be done without if you are a beginner. There are a bunch of golf gadgets available, but the basics are all you need to play.
