Adjustments To Your Golf Game

By Dr. Michael Weir

Chiropractic care is standard for many pro golfers and increasingly for many Senior Golfers as well. Professional golfer Lori West attributes the reason she's playing today to chiropractic. Nearly two decades ago, she began visiting a chiropractor for pain in her shoulders and neck. According to West, the care has infinitely improved her golf game.

The problem is that the golf swing, in and of itself, isn't conducive to having a healthy back. To have a good swing you create tension in your spine. (This enables you to get good distance). The tension comes from the hips stopping and the shoulders continuing to rotate. Basically, you make a coil. You're uncoiling when you start your downswing. Since that's an awkward movement for your back, many golfers end up with lower back problems.

Here is some advice for your golf game. Always spend plenty of time stretching before any golf activity, warming up your hips and shoulders. A great warm up is to put a club across your shoulders and bend in each direction, forward, back and side to side. Raise a club above your head and gently pull back to loosen the shoulders. Get into your swing stance, and then switch to your opposite grip (ie. left hand if you are a righty and right hand if you are a lefty) and take some practice swings. Do some gentle neck rolls and stretch's. This helps to mobilize the shoulder girdle and take pressure off of the shoulders. Flexibility is the most important aspect of a golf game.

Balance is also a large part of a good, consistent golf game. The foundation of balance is the spine, and an unhealthy spine does not allow for proper balance. In some cases I have found that arch supports in the shoe is the key to creating a balanced spine and a balanced golf game.

Chiropractors care for your body as a whole, not just the back. So if your golf game is feeling out of sync, chiropractic may be just the very adjustment that your body and game needs!
