Information On Different Types Of Chalets

By Adriana Noton

Chalets, also known as Swiss, ski and mountain chalets (and there are even more), are types of residential and popular vacation homes. These homes are uniquely built and were originally placed in mountain regions starting a long time ago. When they were first being built, they were being used for a very specific farming reason.

These amazing homes first appeared at the Swiss Alps. The cattle farmers would take their herds up to the mountain for the summer months. They would live in the home during this time while taking care of their livestock. Right before the winter months came in, they would then take their cattle and head back down to the valley.

These days, this type of architectural home is used as vacation homes at ski resorts during the winter months, a peaceful stay in summertime up in the mountains or a hunting retreat during the fall. This design of home has also been called cottages, camps, lodges, cabins and bungalows. They offer large decks and deep balconies for great relaxing. Depending on where one is at in the world, these beautiful homes can be found sitting right on a luxury beach front.

Whatever the name, these homes have structure designs like no other. The homes feature wide, covered porches with gently sloping roof lines. Typically, the structures have exposed, wooden beams on the inside, as well as the outside of the home. This tends to give them a more rustic and comfortable feel throughout the home.

An open floor plan is the normal interior for these homes, along with high vaulted ceilings. Massive windows are a big part of the design that lets in natural warm sun light. They are spacious enough to comfortably hold a large group of people at once. It is typical for them to offer large storage spaces for ski supplies and other winter attire, as well.

When these homes were first being built long ago, they were roofed with shingles that were cut in decorative styles. The over sized eaves are supported than and now with large brackets that are cut in decorative styles, too. The older brackets had a lacy pattern look to them, while the newer version are more of a rustic feel with wooden beams.

Chalets are two stories tall and sometimes a half story will be added for a loft. Since they are normally placed in the mountains, they offer large fireplaces with grand stone chimneys. No matter where they are built, they're most likely to offer large windows featuring a picturesque scene from inside.

These homes started appearing during the late 19th century and became popular by the early 20th century because of their comfortable and inviting style. The unique style was introduced to America around 1885. As the styles may get grander, they still keep their charm and are still being built today.
