Gifts for Dad this Christmas

By Dexter Dickinson

Christmas is a time when finding the right present for a golfer can be somewhat overwhelming, particularly when the person doing the buying does not play the game. A golf voucher can often seem the answer, but handing over bits of paper to be unwrapped is never quite as special as a golf gift for men.

The sheer range of things that qualify as a golf present is quite overwhelming at times, making the gift buyer, especially if they do not know much about the sport, floundering to find the right item. This is when it is good to look for something with a touch of humour or quirkiness to it. Slippers designed to look like golf shoes is one idea.

These will provide a talking point amongst the family when they are opened and can go on to become a trademark garment for their owner, a sense of occasion that opening a golf voucher cannot match. Available online or in golf stores, a careful internet search should reveal some appealing examples.

Children can often struggle to find suitable presents on a limited budget and can sometimes rely on golf gift vouchers as they are more affordable. A golf-themed item such as a mug could be a good item for a child to give their father this Christmas. A mug functions as a souvenir and can often be a poignant reminder of the comforts of home and the golf course when the office gets stressful.

Golf is a game which requires accessories, whether scoring pencils, tees or balls; and these are all items which have a habit of unaccountably disappearing. Buying a few of these kinds of items as stocking filler type gifts can be a good idea. For anyone who is willing to spend a bit more money, then a full accessories set is an option. These will include every kind of item a golfer needs, whether practise tees or wooden tees, a pitch fork or a club face checker, or simply pencils and pens.

Of course, more serious players who may have played at St Andrews may actually be hoping for some top level golf equipment for Christmas. Head covers for clubs are a good choice for a golf present. These can be obtained in a variety of designs, from the sensible and professional, to the quirky and humorous, with some designs featuring famous cartoon characters available. These can cheer up even the grumpiest of golf bags, much more so than a simple golf voucher.

A device for the serious player is a rangefinder, something which normally retails at over 100. Allowing for accurate calculations of distance to the hole and position on the course, it is best to seek specialist advice on the best kind of device to buy, preferably from an experienced player.

Handing out golf gift vouchers at Christmas time may well seem to be the easiest thing to do, but there is nothing quite so touching as receiving a golf present which has been carefully chosen, especially when the gift is for a father.
