The best winter golfing destinations

By Jenny Leroy

Leaving the bad winter behind for a while is always a good idea. If you enjoy golf, stick the clubs in the boot of the car and head for the airport. You may never have thought of golf breaks in France but for somewhere different yet no less authentic, give it some consideration.

If this really interests you, head for the resort town of Belek in southern Mediterranean Turkey. It's in the region of Pamphylia with a good climate, sandy beaches and the impressive backdrop of the Tarsus Mountains. It's a great spot and you won't be disappointed.

Ancient meets modern in this area with Antalya International Airport just over half an hour away and a visible sense of history even nearer. Step back in time and visit hidden caves, amphitheatres and archaeological ruins before indulging in a round of golf to the highest modern standards. Courses designed by Colin Montgomerie and Sir Nick Faldo are a feature of golf holidays in Turkey, so Belek is the place to be.

If two words ever sprang to mind that would encapsulate a classic winter golfing breaks then they would be golf Marbella. You could argue that Marbella is the town of the Costa del Sol, the jewel in the Andalusian crown and easily accessible from Malaga airport. It's certainly made its name as a popular destination for the rich and famous as well as a welcome port of call for the cruise ships and mega yachts that frequent the area.

For the round of golf Marbella has something for everyone. From the professional right through to the beginner, you'd be made welcome. It's a specialist business with golfing hotels, self-catering villas and bungalows and country clubs all available. Take a tour, that executive break, a golfing weekend or something a bit longer. When it comes to golf Marbella won't let you down.

If taking a gamble is a bit more in your nature, then playing one of the Las Vegas golf courses could be just what you're after. If the city itself has a reputation built on roulette, blackjack and poker, you'll have to pit your wits in a different way with a club in your hand. It's only on Christmas Day that you won't find one of the courses open.

If the temperature drops this time of year then so do the rates leaving you more money to spend in a fine restaurant or on a world-class cabaret show. You may need a few layers on at the start of the round but golf on a cool, crisp day is a very pleasurable experience. Generally through the day the temperatures will rise, but things will certainly warm up at night with the host of attractions 'Vegas' has to offer.

With more than 50 Las Vegas golf courses from which to choose, all levels of ability are catered for from the beginner through to those on the PGA Tour. All in all, the city really is a byword for fun and 'Vegas' really wants its visitors to have a great time. And not a bad way either to leave behind the traffic jams, blocked roads, closed schools and the rest of the winter gloom.
