Take The Slice Away From Your Golf Swing

By Allan Marsh

Every golfer wants to achieve that textbook swing, a swing they can use game in, game out. And when you've achieved that swing, you can get the same results from a wood or an iron. You can do anything, may it be drive or tee off, and if you encounter the elements, that can't stop you. Stick a fork in the swing if you may, may it be water or sand or bunkers, and that won't get in its way. Yet it is so simple - hard to believe that you could rely on such a great swing with so little effort!

But if your swing has slice, then it's just as good as saying somebody dipped your golf club in kryptonite.

Perfecting that golf swing definitely isn't easy, no matter how you look at it. A lot of great golfers have experimented and practiced long and hard to perfect their swing. But truth be told, all the difficulty involved in learning how to perfect your swing is honestly overrated. All it takes just might be some modifications in the way you swing the club.

Simplicity

It always works with me, and it should work with you as well - simplify your golf swing. Economical swinging motions without any of the fancy stuff reduce the risk of injury and minimize the waste of body energy and overfatigue. For example, it is unnecessary to bend your elbows during the course of the swing, and all you need is your feet as a pivot during the all-important follow through. There is no need to take an extra step or anything, which can skew with the shot.

Rhythm

If improving on your own is something you can't quite achieve, then hiring an instructor to set you on the right path may be a solution. Balance and correct positioning are crucial to a good golf swing. But you can't expect to improve on those two areas if you don't have rhythm. Ironing out the kinks in your swing can become much easier if you find the rhythm necessary to make that swing look like a Mona Lisa - at least in golfing standards. Relax your mind and do whatever it takes to get into a proper rhythm, may it be counting, singing a popular song, or even a standard like "When The Saints Go Marching In".

Hand and Wrist Position

Another tip is to always mind hand and wrist position. One of the major causes of slicing is that the club is twisted during the swing, which makes it hit the ball in a crooked manner, driving it in directions other than straight ahead. This is due to the hands and wrists twisting during the swing because of wrong positioning. You have to fix this as soon as possible to prevent this pitfall.

Interlocking your hands by connecting the little and ring finger of your dominant hand with the index and middle finger of your complementary hand (never call that other hand 'weak') to solve this problem. It may not sound too easy at first, but practice makes perfect, as they always say. You could even improve both ball speed and accuracy this way.

Keep Your Spine Straight

Always have your spine straight and acting as an axis for your swing. Any golfer who's been around a few times and back will tell you spine alignment means a lot. The spine is the source of all centrifugal force coming from your swing. This can help you simplify your golf swing in a great deal.

Hip Rotation

With that spine straight and fingers interlocked, you must also remove excess hip rotation in your golf swing. While lots of hip rotation is something that can make a punch stronger, this is not boxing. In golf, that hip rotation causes slicing, and that can damage your game. Only rotate your hips as recommended, as doing it too much would only affect your game. But don't misconstrue this as having to totally remove hip rotation from your swing, as your hips are still a primary source of swing power.

Hip rotation, and all the other tips above can be perfected by reading up diligently. These tips, along with lots of practice, can help you remove that slice and achieve distance and accuracy in your golf swing.
